What Elements to Look for in a Carpet if You Have Active Kids

TETRRF-00022680-001If you have kids you know that it is nearly impossible to keep your home as clean as you would like. Try as you might to clean up their messes it always seems like a new one pops up in its place. And your carpets? Forget about it! Active children trample dirt, spill liquids and leave their mark on every surface throughout a home. On a hardwood or tile floor dirt, scuffs and spills are fairly easy to clean, but on the carpets throughout your home footprints, snags and traffic tracks are a different story. But fear not, there are numerous kinds of carpets that you can choose from which are better at holding up to the wear and tear of an active lifestyle.

When selecting a carpet it is important to factor in the type of activities that will occur in the room. For a room with heavy traffic and children activities you may consider installing the following styles of carpet:

1) Textured Carpets are very popular styles for families because they are great for all areas of the home. These are cut pile carpet with alternating twists of yarn that create a two-tone appearance. Its textured surface is great at hiding footprints, track marks and vacuum marks.

2) Frieze Carpets are extremely durable and ideal for active areas in your home. The frieze style is also a cut pile with a very high twist level. This means that each strand of yarn is twisted so tightly that it actually curls over at the end. The feature creates a textured and durable surface that will minimize the need for carpet repair.

3) Looped or Berber Carpets are durable due to the fact that the yarn tips are not cut. This makes them ideal for hiding footprints but may not be the best selection if your children play with toys on the carpet because they have a tendency to snag. But, for high traffic areas this carpet is a must have, especially nylon threaded Berber.

Style is not the only element to take into consideration when purchasing a carpet for an active family. You’re will want to select a color that minimizes the appearance of dirt. Having kids you are going to want to the darkest color possible, in order to cover up stains and dirt tracks. At the same time no one really wants a black carpet and you still want something that matches the other elements of your home, so here’s a little trick to help in deciding what color will minimize your necessity for professional carpet cleaning.  Get a sampling of carpet swatches and compare them to any existing dirt tracks you have in your house. Once you have a match you should go a shade darker and then you’ll have the optimum color for your home and budget.

Finally, consider soil resistance and cushioning. Many carpets have stain resistance built right in, but that does not mean they are soil resistant. To protect your carpet, you will want to look for carpet brands like Stainmaster, Anso, Wear Dated or Shaw’s R2X which are specially designed to resist soil mark.

Not only will your family track dirt through the house but there will probably be a spill or two. You can protect against spills on your carpet with a high quality cushioning and a spill barrier. This will prevent any spills from seeping through to the padding and protect your home from mildew and mold.

Shaw Sets Pie Fight World Record in Anso Promotion

shaw-world-record-pie-fight-fullShaw Floors set a world record for the world’s largest pie fight Jan. 7 in a promotion for its Anso nylon products.

The event, staged for the Guinness Book of World Records, involved 434 participants as well as 1,200 cherry, chocolate and apple pies.

The company held the pie fight on its premium Anso nylon carpet as a way to demonstrate Anso nylon’s superior ability to repel stains and to be easily cleaned.

Following the world record event, Shaw cleaned approximately 3,000 pounds of pie from the carpet and displayed the previously pie-covered results today in the lobby of the Embassy Suites in Grapevine, Texas, the site of the event.

“We can’t wait to tell consumers that Anso nylon survived the world’s Largest Pie Fight,” said Shaw President Randy Merritt.

The Shaw event beat the previous world record of 269 participants, which was set by the television show LIVE! With Regis and Kelly on Sept. 17, 2009.

Video footage of Shaw’s pie fight festivities, certificate presentation, post-event carpet cleaning and the surviving, spotless carpet can be viewed at www.shawfloors.com/anso/piefight.

Mohawk EverStrand BCF/Filament Fiber Now Available with Post Consumer Content

everstrand-bigMohawk has developed technology which allows the use of post-consumer recycled content in its EverStrand BCF fiber styles. The company has been offering 100% post-consumer recycled in its EverStrand staple polyester fiber.

Effective immediately, all of Mohawk EverStrand BCF and Mohawk EverStrand BCF XtraSoft fibers will include post-consumer recycled content from plastic bottles. Additionally, Mohawk will provide On Demand Certification Letters to document recycled content for all EverStrand carpet styles.

David Duncan, Mohawk’s Vice-President of Marketing, said new EverStrand filament styles are being introduced that will contain the new fiber.

“We’re expanding the EverStrand BCF collection, particularly with new products in our EverStrand BCF XtraSoft fiber,” he said.

EverStrand BCF XtraSoft fiber brings a superior level of aesthetics, performance, and feel to the polyester category.  Introduced last year in Mohawk’s “Sensationally Soft” line, the fiber offers “quality, durability and softness that reaches new heights for polyester,” Duncan said.  It also offers a lifetime stain resistance warranty.

Duncan and Cross noted that Mohawk has a heritage in recycling plastic bottles into carpet, and plans to further develop its EverStrand BCF technology to include more post consumer recycled content in the future.

Mohawk has recycled more than 24 billion soft drink bottles for use in carpet fiber, and continues recycling more than 3 billion bottles each year. One out of every four bottles recycled in North America becomes Mohawk carpet. Mohawk’s EverStrand    fiber is a staple polyester that has long been produced entirely from recycled soft drink bottles.

Because the US Food & Drug Administration requires top quality PET (polyethylene terephthalate) for beverage bottles, the recycled product offers superior performance characteristics over many fibers used in making other brands of carpet yarns.  On average, 30 plastic bottles are recycled to make one square yard of Mohawk EverStrand carpet. Question 8 In the Series Top 10 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Flooring

TETRRF-00006875-001Today we are answering the eighth question in the 1o part series: Top 10 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Flooring.

Question: Is carpet a bad choice if I have allergies?

Answer: NO. NO. NO. NO. NO.

The folks at the Carpet and Rug Institute say it best on their site so I will give you the highlights from them. (for the full page of information with links and other useful info, click here.)

Things you should know:

  • Carpet actually  helps keep the air free of allergens and pollutants when properly vacuumed and maintained.
  • It’s what falls to the carpet – such as allergens, common dust, pet dander and other pollutants – that tends to stay on the carpet until it is vacuumed, unlike smooth surfaces that allow these particles to re-circulate.
  • Properly maintained carpet leads to improved air quality and a healthier indoor environment because regular vacuuming with a Carpet and Rug Institute Seal of Approval -certified vacuum cleaner locks pollutants in the machine and removes them from the air you breathe.

Need more?

  • There is no scientific study linking the rise of allergy and asthma to the use of carpet. Indeed, several studies actually disprove any correlation.
  • Carpet may even be helpful to people with asthma: http://journals.elsevierhealth.com/medline/record/MDLN.12170270
  • A 2003 study of more than 4,600 school children in New Jersey found that having carpet in a child’s bedroom was associated with fewer missed school days and less need for asthma medication.  http://www.nature.com/jes/journal/v13/n3/full/7500266a.html
  • Studies have compared the distribution of airborne dust associated with normal activities on hard and soft flooring surfaces. Findings show that walking on hard surfaces disturbed more particles. These particles became airborne and entered the breathing zone. In contrast, carpeted surfaces trapped more particles so that walking disturbed fewer particles. The result was less dust in the breathing zone over carpeted floors.  http://www.carpet-health.org/pdf/AllergenPaper.pdf PDF
