Today’s traditional style can be formal or more casual and still be called traditional. Traditional designs and design elements can be done in more casual materials for a less formal look and feel. This living room is a great example of a more relaxed style that is still traditional.
A skirted sofa with traditional lines doesn’t need to feel stuffy. Natural cotton, linen or cotton velvet make for more casual upholstery on a traditional style sofa. Traditional design details like piping and rolled arms fit in with the style of the rest of the room. The button-tufted ottoman used as a coffee table has wonderful design detail. Using an ottoman as a coffee table means it is okay to put your feet up on the table; something you would never do in a formal room.
The armchair flanking the sofa has a more traditional style tapestry inspired upholstery. The throw pillow is also more detailed with a tasseled trim than you might find in a casual living room. The muted color of the upholstery and throw pillow combined with the relaxed club chair form keep the chair from feeling too formal. The ceiling fan gives the room a more casual feeling than a traditional chandelier.
The open plan with view to the dining room is also a less formal floor plan. Having the same flooring flow between the spaces makes the different rooms feel part of a single design concept. Area rugs identify the living and dining areas.
