How to Use Pastels in Your Home Design

March 20, 2019 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

Nothing can influence an atmosphere quite as powerfully as colors. Incorporating warm tones and cool tones can change the whole feel of a room. You can use dark colors to “shrink” a room or light colors to make it feel bright and airy. Yet, colors go deeper than just their tones. Their hues can equally be as effective in a room. Think of a room that is neon green versus a room that is a deep forest green. These hues have a significant influence on the character portrayed. Likewise, pastel colors have a very distinct and purposeful place in design. Here are some of the best ways to incorporate pastel colors throughout your home:

Soft

If you are looking to incorporate color into your home, but do not want to stray from a neutral influence atmosphere, try incorporating pastel colors. These are more muted tones of colors. Instead of using a bold red, try a pastel pink. It can help make a passive atmosphere while using warm and cool tones throughout the design. These dusted shades are perfect for creating the most calming, yet colorful environment.

Spring Décor

All colors can have a psychological influence on an atmosphere. They can be used to influence hunger, passive sales, and even creativity. Marketing companies use this knowledge when creating logos or ads to catch your attention. Pastel colors are most commonly affiliated with spring décor. Hence, spring ads will usually use a wide variety of pastel pinks, yellows, and blues to grab your attention. You can use this trick in your own home. Pastel colors work great for spring décor and Easter decorations as well as catching attention in any design.

Balance

With any color scheme, it is all about balance, and when using pastels, you can create harmony with light, neutral colors like white or tan. These soft colors will help emphasize the light, airiness of the space without taking away from the beauty found in pastel colors.

Like with anything, designing a space takes time. Sometimes it is about waiting to find the perfect pieces to create an effortless masterpiece. For more expert advice, visit our blog hub here.

How to Pick The Perfect Paint Color

March 8, 2019 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

The color of a room can completely change are aesthetics and mood.  The color in a room is the first visual given when entering a room. Picking the perfect paint for your space can be quite a task.  There are many variables to give weight to before jumping into this task.  Here are five important topics to ponder before choosing the color right for your space.

1. Lighting

2. Existing Furniture

3. Windows and Other Views

4. Room Dimensions

5. Express Yourself

Lighting

Carpeting, generally, looks lighter when applied from a small sample to the entire floor. Typically, this concept is opposite with paints, whereas they can feel much darker when taken from a small area and applied to the entire wall. Lighting plays a huge factor in how we perceive colors. How a paint swatch looks in a store’s fluorescent lights may appear entirely different in a dimly lit den. Make sure to test your paint in different areas of the room before applying it in the entire room. In doing so, you can give yourself a better understanding of how the color will look in different areas, lighting, and times of the day.

Existing Furniture

Unless you are planning on buying new furniture to remodel a room, we suggest you find colors that complement your pre-existing furniture. If your furniture is rustic, you may not want to do a bright, bold wall; however, a bold wall may look beautiful in a game room that already features decor pieces in that shade. Remember to let your furniture help decide the theme and where your room is going to go.

Windows and Other Views

What you can see from the room can play a role in the design. If you are on a lake, an aquatic theme may be a great way to bring that beautiful oasis indoors. Also, consider what you can see from focal points in the room. Try to make your rooms flow into one another. If you can see a bright orange room, you may want to be cautious about what color you put on the wall running into that room.

Room Dimensions

The size of your room can play a role in paint color as well! Like lighting, the size of your room can give the room a cozy size or a grand gathering room. Decide what color complements the size of your room and whether it amplifies the Feng Shui.

Express Yourself

Pick colors you will enjoy. You have colors in your life every day that will make you happy. If you wear pink every day because it makes you happy, maybe you will want to make one of your rooms pink. If you feel bold wearing red, maybe a black and white space with a red accent will help express you. This is the most crucial part of your room design. Make sure it makes you happy!

Picking the right paint color can be challenging, but it is a great way to change a room feel. Make sure to consider how the lighting and existing furniture will look against your paint. We suggest you take the paint swatch home and compare it to your furniture and lighting. Make sure it feels good with the room size and the atmosphere around it. Most importantly make sure it is what you want! A freshly painted room should make you feel excited and happy when entering and be confident with your choice.

How to Properly Paint a Room

December 17, 2018 By Leave a Comment

Paint is probably one of the most affordable and quickest ways to transform a room’s appearance. It allows homeowners to add personality and detail to a space without overwhelming the design.

If you are new to painting, do not be overwhelmed.  There are four easy steps: preparation, trimming, rolling, and the finish. With this quick and easy guide, we hope to simplify the process for you while including must-know details for your project. Let’s take a look!

Beginning Act

Prepping your space is an essential step to ensure your paint job has a professional quality finish.  Take your time with prepping and do not rush because it will show in your end product.  Start by clearing your room of all furniture and covering your floor with a tarp.  You will need to remove your outlet covers as well.  You may want to put the screws back in once the outlet covers are removed, so you do not lose them, and cover the outlets with painter’s tape.  Remove doors and place the pins back in the hinges for safe keeping.  Remove wallpaper and patch any holes in your wall with spackle.

Once any holes are filled and dried, use sandpaper to sand the area to a smooth finish.  Next, give the room a quick wipe down.  Grab a lightly dampened rag and wipe down all your walls and trim to remove dust.  Dust could possibly be on your baseboards and above your door trim.  If you plan on painting your trim, you will need to check if it has been painted prior.  Most trim is painted with an oil-based paint which cannot be painted over.  Sand your trim and apply a primer to the trim and any patchwork you have done in the room.

Sectioned Off

Depending on the amount of paint you have purchased, you may need to mix them to create a homogeneous blend.  Get a large, clean pale and pour your paint gallons into and stir.  Next, you will need to paint the trim in your room.  Generally, painters prefer to start with the ceiling before the walls.  Tape off where your ceiling meets the walls to avoid splatter.  Use a paint roller to paint the majority of your ceiling.  For the edges, you should use a brush.  Let the ceiling dry and remove the tape.  Next, apply your painter’s tape to trim your walls.  Use a paintbrush to get hard to reach areas like corners and where the walls meet the ceiling or trim.  When cutting in with your brush, use light, smooth strokes to avoid runs.  Do not press harder to get more paint.  Just add more paint to the brush as needed.

They See Me Rollin’

After you edge in all your room with paint, grab your roller and apply your paint to the walls.  This is the usually the step people like to rush too but do not rush the importance of prepping and trimming in your room.  Mentally, break your walls into smaller four-foot by four-foot sections to focus on doing.  When using your roller, go slow to avoid splatters and go in different directions to hit all angles.  To get closer to your trimmer in work, turn the roller sideways.  You may need to apply a second or even third coat after the first coat dries.

The Finishing Touch

Once you have finished applying all your coats, let the paint dry before removing your painter’s tape.  Do not wait too long after your paint dries, or you will peel your paint off as well.  Using a razor blade can help you remove the tape without pulling off paint.  Remember to clean your brushes and rollers when you are done.  Put your doors, and outlet covers back on and remove your flooring tarp.  Your room is ready to have it furniture added now.

Paint instantly changes the feel and tone to a room.  Whether you paint your space yourself or hire a professional, undoubtedly, a fresh paint job will transform your room’s entire look.

Genius Tips for an Overly Bright Window

November 27, 2018 By Leave a Comment

Most buyers will search for a home that provides a lot of natural light. Unfortunately, yours may feature a little more than typically wanted. If you feel like the light coming through your window is overpowering, we have six genius ideas to help you. Let’s take a look at six ideas for an overly bright window:

Ideas for an Overly Bright Window:

1. Soften The Effect.

You may find it helpful to place curtains over the window that produces a lot of natural light. Instead of getting rid of all of the light that is produced from the window, you may want to incorporate sheer curtains. Sheer curtains will help soften the intensity caused by the sunlight while still allowing an ample amount of light to enter the space.

2. Incorporate Plants.

Greenery can help the window’s brightness feel deliberate. A few plants here and there will add some charm as well as tone down the room’s overly bright nature.

3. Begin The Day Earlier.

Bright spaces give the opportunity to start your day early. You can get a jump start on activities and begin each morning feeling refreshed.

4. Take Advantage of The Light.

You may find it a little difficult to sleep in a room with an overly bright window, but it can make for the perfect workspace. Homeowners find the brightness inspiring, and it helps them get a jump start on work.

5. Contrast It.

Homeowners also find it helpful to contrast the bright nature of the window with a darker wall color. Some may even go as far as using black on the walls to balance out the brightness. We recommend sampling some paint colors within your room before committing. You want to be sure that the colors work well during all hours.

6. Create an Indoor Garden.

If the well-lit area of your home is inside your kitchen or dining room, you can create a mini indoor garden with fresh herbs. The windowsill can be the perfect place for mini pots and containers. Just be sure to find easy-to-grow herbs that work well in sunny areas.

We hope you enjoyed these tips and tricks! Be sure to check back weekly at From The Floors Up for more expert advice. Thanks for reading!

6 Tips When Selling Your Home

February 8, 2018 By creatingyourspace

Selling your home can be a huge undertaking. With everything you have to get in order, there are a few often overlooked tips that you may not even consider when selling your home. To increase the likelihood of selling your house, we have created six things that you will want to try. We hope you enjoy and good luck!

6 Tips When Selling Your Home:

Don’t Under or Over Design Rooms

If a room looks empty, it can turn away buyers and if a room is too packed, it can also deter buyers. To increase your chances of selling your home, we recommend trying to maintain an appropriate balance of furniture. You will want to compliment the home’s architecture while having enough room to walk throughout the room. If you are having difficulties with the design aspect, your realtor can be a great resource. They see a lot of homes each day and know exactly what buyers want. Ask them for some basic staging advice and go from there.

Creating a Real Environment

Buyers want to imagine themselves living in your home one day. Displaying fake items (photos, plants, & food) can seem staged and unwelcoming. Instead, you want to try and use the furniture and decor that you already own. This will help create a more homey feel and buyers will be able to imagine themselves living in your home.

Don’t Showcase Small Items

An incorrect illusion that some homeowners try to create is placing small items in a room to make the room look bigger. This just tends to look awkward and it creates a pause in the design. Make sure you purchase furniture that is appropriately sized for the room. Again, if you need help, ask your realtor for assistance.

Embrace a Strong Design

Overly committing to a design can actually do a disservice to you as a seller. Buyers should be able to see through your design to picture their stuff in your home. With an overpowering design, it could block their imagination and harm your selling potential.

Don’t Shut Doors

While potential buyers are touring your home, you want to create an open environment. This can be done by opening all of your doors to let them flow from one room into the next. If you close your doors, you close the home’s design and your buyer could even potential miss any entire area of your home.

Spice it Up.

Do not get us wrong, a neutral color scheme is one of the most classic and well-sought after palettes for homeowners. Unfortunately, buyers believe that there can be a thing as too much neutral. To help differentiate your home from all the other houses, we recommend adding pops of color subtly throughout your home. Now, there is no need to go overboard with color and expensive items. Just a few items here and there will do the trick.
