This post was inspired by our invitation to this year’s Bathroom Blogfest. (you can learn more on the Bathroom Blogfest Facebook page or on Twitter @bathroomblogfes)
Most of us were born long after outdoor bathrooms such as the one in the photo existed. Some of us are old enough to have heard stories from family about how hard it was to dress for the outdoors and tromp through the cold to the family outhouse. In the summer there were other challenges – flies and an odor that is better not thought of.
Bathing was done in a tub in the kitchen, with water heated on a wood or coal oil stove. The tub had to be filled and emptied by hand, so baths were rare, and the same tub-full of water was used by the whole family.
Our world of spa-oriented baths, with running hot and cold water and showers featuring multiple sprays and steam would have been beyond the belief of our ancestors. While you’re spending the time choosing just the right sink, vanity and combination of shower and bath features, take a moment to consider how far we’ve come in the past 100 years.
And when someone talks about the “good old days,” show them the picture above and ask them if they would really want to go back!
