Master Suite Sitting Areas

July 19, 2012 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

New home construction and remodels often feature large master bedrooms with en suite bathrooms.  After placing a king size bed, a pair of nightstands and a dresser, there can can be a great deal of floor space leftover in the room.  What can you do with extra the space?

There are several options on what to do with this extra space in a master suite.  One option, is adding an enjoyable seating area.  After all, a master suite should be a getaway from the demands of everyday life. Creating a calm, relaxing space for you to unwind and escape, the master suite can be your private oasis. Carving out a seating area with a sofa or pair of chairs allows you a place to read a book, take a nap, or just hang out away from all of the hustle and bustle.

This master bedroom suite is a nice example of a large space that is divided into a sleeping zone and a seating area.  The bed is off to the right of the frame, with a seating area in front of the window and closer to the fireplace. The fireplace is a great focal point in this master bedroom.

Different zones in the master bedroom can be identified with area rugs. A large area rug could be placed under the bed and a coordinating or matching rug by the seating area.

Choosing Art for the Bedroom

May 16, 2012 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

Bare, blank walls can make a room feel unfinished. Choosing what to hang where in the home can also be intimidating for some. Staring at a blank wall when decorating is kind of like a writer staring at a blank page when writing.  The blank stare can stifle us from making a decision. If you have blank walls in your bedroom, or anywhere in your home, we hope this article can help you take the first step to decorating your walls.

Bedrooms should be sanctuaries and calm places for us to restore our spirits as well as rest our bodies.  Comfortable textiles on the bed, soft flooring like carpet or area rugs on the floor, curtains that can block light all create the environment for good sleep.  You can add to the soothing and restorative qualities of your bedroom by what you hang on the walls.

Every wall in the room does not have to be filled with art. Empty spaces give the eye a place to rest. Art for the bedroom can be framed in frames that coordinate with the furniture, wall or floor. Metal frames can also add a little sparkle to the room. You can frame practically anything and it will look great on the wall. Framed art can include family photos, your wedding portrait or vacation photos. Fabric and paper can also be framed. Choose art that speaks to you. If you love it, you will love to see it as you fall asleep and wake up every day.

Painting Inspires Bedroom Design

October 19, 2011 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

As you plan your bedroom’s design, don’t limit yourself to the realities provided by photos in magazines. Think outside the film by checking out favorite paintings for ideas.

This image provides the feeling of a warm and feminine space. If this appeals to you, then you can borrow ideas for your own bedroom.

Start with the window area. This looks like a window with an arch at the top, but look closer and you can see that the curve is created with molding and paint. For a few dollars and a little effort, you can recreate something similar. If painting is not your skill, look for stencils of flowers you like and use colors that coordinate with your room’s palette.

The window seat can be replaced with a small bench or loveseat. Use cushions and pillows that coordinate with the rest of the room. Sheer or lace curtains would mimic the feel of these soft drapes.

The upholstered chair is a classic wing chair design and easy to find. If you upholster the chair and a small ottoman in the same striped fabric, you’re well on the way to recreating this painting’s appeal. Add a dresser or chest of drawers in honey pine, and consider using a glaze to create the green cast for the drawers. Add an oval mirror above it to stay consistent with the painting.

You can use your imagination for flooring that would fit this room. Wood with several area rugs has the right appeal for the space. Carpeting in cream, light green or even lavender would set the room off beautifully.

A little money, time and imagination is all it will take to capture the inviting aspects of this room in your own home. Just pick one or more ideas to make your space as appealing as this painting.
