Steps for Painting Your Garage Floor

January 23, 2020 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

Garages can get a lot of traffic and become quite dirty over time. Concrete can muck up unwanted grease and oil and be challenging to clean. With a porous floor, concrete floor stains can easily ruin your garage appearance. A simple solution to make your garage look beautiful and be easier to clean is painting your garage floor. However, there are a few steps that you are going to want to take before beginning this task. Follow this step by step guide to ensure the best finished product. Let’s get started!

Remove Oil, Grease, and Stains

Oil and grease stains can be tough to remove. You can put down cat litter to help absorb some of the oil or grease. Allow it to sit for a day to continue to pull from the concrete. Sweep up the cat litter and apply dish detergent and scrub vigorously. You can also purchase oil and grease remover at your local hardware or car supply shop to assist with removing the stains.

Fill in Cracks

For the cracks in your concrete, consider using a thin-set material or epoxy paste. Smooth out your material and fill any voids. Allow these to dry and scrape away any unleveled areas. You may need to do some light sanding if the crack was very large and the epoxy comes out unsmooth.

Seal

Test your garage floor to see if it has been sealed. Start by pouring water on the concrete to see if it will absorb. If the floor has been sealed, the water will remain on top of the concrete. You will need to etch your garage if sealant present. Spread a commercial etcher and allow to dry overnight. This step will give your paint a better surface. Next, apply an epoxy sealant to your floor to prevent staining the next morning and allow it to dry.

Paint

Not all paints will work for different types of garage floors. Find an epoxy-based paint that is recommended for painting garages. Mix well and apply a thin layer using a roller. Repeat this method after each layer is fully dried. This process can take several days.

Painting your garage floor can take several days to complete; however, it is very rewarding. A clean, freshly painted garage floor can help prevent unwanted stains and spruce up the aesthetics of your space. For more tips and tricks on home improvement, make sure to subscribe.

Fabulous Garage Floors

December 12, 2011 By creatingyourspace 2 Comments

Do you want to transform your garage from drab to fab?  Then you may want to consider investing in garage flooring.  Not only will it beautify your home but add protection to the one floor most neglected in your home…the garage.

A lot of time and money is invested in flooring for our homes protecting them from damage but not much for our garage floors.  Concrete garage floors can’t withstand harsh corrosives of grease, oil, battery acids, and other substances.  Continuous exposure to those materials corrode the garage floor and leave it dirty and stained.

Cleaning concrete floors can also be challenging and time-consuming.  Proper care and maintenance of your garage floor is important for a well-maintained home.

There are several different options for garage flooring.  The common ones are the vinyl or lacquer paints, epoxy, floor tiles or rolled vinyl mats.  Vinyl and lacquer paints will protect your floors but are only a small solution to the problem, will have to be done every so often and the time to paint the garage floor can be tedious.  Using an epoxy would improve the look of your garage and are relatively longer lasting than paints.

For enhancing the look of your garage, floor tiles are a long-lasting and permanent solution to maintaining your garage floors.  Though a bit expensive, the cost and installation of garage tiles or mats considerably reduce the need of frequent repairs to your floor.

Garage floor tiles come in a wide range of colors and patterns that will match your style.  They are highly resistant to corrosive substances and they can be easily cleaned.  They are also durable enough to withstand the weight of heavy vehicles and resistant to cracks and dents.

Deciding between the different types of tiles and mats is going to be your biggest challenge because of their differences.  Rigid Plastic Garage Floor tiles are 100% PVC and are usually about ¼-inch thick and stand up to most chemicals, oils, grease, and other substances found in a garage.

Flexible Garage Floor tiles are much easier to stand and walk on and are easy to clean but aren’t well suited for cars or heavy machinery.

Wood Composite Garage Floors are made for basement subflooring but can also be used for garage flooring.  Wood composite floors have a moister barrier on the bottom that keeps the top dry and can hold up to 4,000lbs per square foot, which makes them great for standard garage purposes.

With all the different styles and colors of garage flooring there should be no reason why your garage shouldn’t look as good as the rest of your home.  The flooring around your home is thought out and planned to match walls and furniture.   So why doesn’t your garage match the rest of your house?  It’s just as much a part of your humble abode as any of your other rooms.

Though some may consider garage flooring a costly option, they are very easy to maintain and are known for endurance.  Durable garage flooring options can improve the quality of your garage and make it an important and charming part of your home.
