How To Choose Flooring For A Kid’s Room

August 7, 2020 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

Flooring choices today seem nearly endless. There are products made of nearly every conceivable material in both hard and soft surfaces. Homeowners installing new flooring in a room of their home have a lot of choices to consider. These choices become even more important when the flooring is going into an area predominately used by kids.

Kids’ Flooring Considerations

While style or sustainability may be factors that you look for in the flooring used through the rest of the house, there are several other considerations that need to come to the forefront of the decision for kids’ room flooring.

What How the Room Is Used

A room that is used for crafts and playtime will need a very different floor than a room used mostly for sleeping or reading. Consider how the kids will use the flooring when making your choice. Will the kids be down on the floor playing? Will the children be doing activities such as painting and drawing? up above it?

Clean Up

Whether you are looking for flooing in a playroom or a bedroom, most parents are aware that kids’ floors tend to get messy. Spilled paint from a craft project or an overturned cup can quickly create a stain that requires some attention. That’s why choosing either a product that is stain resistant like luxury vinyl or a product that can be easily cleaned like stain-resistant carpeting make better choices than something that could absorb the stains. When possible, eliminating things like grout joints and other places that stains can settle is also a wise move in helping to keep the flooring looking great over time.

Resiliency

Some kids like to play rough. Others like to wrestle, and some occasionally are known to drop things. When considering the flooring, take its resiliency into consideration as well. Carpet, luxury vinyl, linoleum, and cork can all be softer underfoot cushioning falls and making for a more comfortable play surface. Bamboo and hemp flooring, on the other hand, will be harder—but more resistant to dents and scratches. Plus, they’re often more eco-friendly flooring choices.

Color and Style

Kids’ rooms should be a reflection of their personalities and things they do there. Consider choosing flooring that can be laid in a variety of colors or patterns or that comes in bold colors that can complement the rest of the kids’ décor.

Choose Wisely

The flooring in your home should last for as long as the room you put it into does. Make a wise choice considering the flooring in a kid’s room to help ensure it outlasts their activities.

Space-Saving Storage Solutions for Kids Room

March 19, 2020 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

From clothes, toys, and books, children tend to amass just as many things as we do. Even if the cleanest you have ever seen your child’s room looks like everything piled on one side of the room, it is time to implement some creative storage solutions. The right storage solutions can get rid of clutter and help keep the room clean for as long as possible.

Window Seating

You can easily recreate the window seating look without having to hire a contractor. Invest in a bench or ottoman that also double as a storage container. With cubbies underneath or ottoman-style storage, this method will complement the interior of the room, and it does not take up much space. Simply measure the dimensions of the window so that you can put a bench that nestles right in the crook of the window.

Built-In Shelving System

Take advantage of every nook and curve in your child’s room by installing shelving units. In fact, you can build in a series of lower shelves to store their toys and favorite books. The upper shelves can be installed to house collectibles and decor accessories.

Cubby System

Cubby systems have become super trendy. You even can create a cubby standing by putting together a few freestanding cubbies. Simply choose a corner or side of the room that will best accommodate the cubby system. Open cubbies are great for storing art supplies, plush animals, and collectibles. You can even use the top of the cubby as a television stand where the gaming system and cable box can go.

Built-In Desk Unit

Building in a desk unit is well worth the expense, especially if your child is at school age already. This desk provides a dedicated space for your kids to complete their homework. The closed drawers can hold stationery products and other items that you do not want to see lying around the room.

Toy Trunk

A toy trunk is a great way to organize all your kid’s toys and dress-up clothes. However, a toy trunk is not just for toys; you can also use it to store linens, pillows, cherished mementos, and other items.

Are you an organized parent? If so, we would love to hear your tips and tricks on organizing your kid’s bedroom. Let us know your thoughts below in the comment section.

Foam Floor Tiles – Think Soft!!!

February 20, 2011 By creatingyourspace 2 Comments

What an honor it is to be writing as a guest to you all in this thorough and informative blog. I’m Bill Harris of Foamtiles.com. We are a website dedicated to marketing and selling closed cell EVA (Ethylene-vinyl acetate) foam tiles in many varieties.

For those of you not familiar with what closed cell, EVA foam is, it is the same material high quality flip flops are made from. If a little patch under each foot can last years, imagine the longevity you can expect with an entire room’s floor covered in it! The “closed cell” part of the description means that, while foam, it is non-absorbing. Liquids will pool on top and can be easily wiped away with a towel. There are many uses for EVA foam. You can find this amazingly versatile product in shoe soles, seat cushions and ski boots to name a few.

This inexpensive and resilient flooring option has becoming one of the most popular choices for flooring in many different applications. It has been used for years in children’s play rooms and day cares as kids play mats. The wide variety of colors, durability, ease of installation and cleaning have all aided the increased usage of these products to protect little heads and knees.

Additionally, foam tiles can now be found in home weight rooms and light duty commercial gyms where a lot of ground work or body weight exercises are performed. The increased popularity of the P90X and plyometric type routines has added to the popularity of soft floor tiles. I can tell you from experience that it is much nicer taking a knee or doing sit ups on foam flooring products than a wooden or hard rubber surface found in many work out areas, providing extra cushion for the joints without being so soft that it will compromise stability. For gyms, it should be noted that heavy equipment like tread mills or weight racks can cause indentations where the feet sit that may not fully recover if the machine is moved from its place.

Another usage that has become increasingly popular lately is in martial arts studios. Anyone that has watched a competition or demonstration can tell you; these guys hit the ground with all their body weight. Having anywhere from ½” to 1 full inch of padding to land on will allow you to extend your workouts and prevent bruising from the throws associated with this kind of sport. They link together tightly with a jig-saw type puzzle interlock that prevents separation during even the most vigorous sparring.

Closed cell EVA foam tiles have infinite color options. There are even tiles that have a very realistic wood pattern laminated to the surface. Tiles like these can be found in trade show booths at nearly every convention center in North America. It is an excellent way to set your booth apart from the competition while providing antifatigue properties for you and your presenters.  Being light and easily installed means you can set up and take down quickly as well as take them with you from show to show, avoiding the costly rental of the facilities flooring. They can also be reconfigured to fit any booth size.

In closing, if you are interested in soft yet durable, affordable and versatile flooring for an area in your home, studio, exercise area, child’s room or trade show booth, consider soft floor tiles next time.  They work great as a portable foam mat or as an installed wall to wall soft flooring solution.  For more information, please feel free to www.foamtiles.com.

Question 3 In the Series Top 10 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Flooring

October 9, 2009 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

Today we are answering the third question in the 1o part series: Top 10 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Flooring.

Question: Is laminate a good choice for homes with kids and pets?

Answer: Laminate flooring is an excellent choice for homes with children and pets. Laminate is a manufactured product that simulates the look of hardwood, ceramic tile, natural stone and many other types of flooring. In the past, laminate floors have been easy to spot, but today’s technology allows manufacturers to create realistic visuals and textures for an elegant and quality floor.

Laminate characteristics:

  • Extremely durable
  • Moisture resistant
  • Scratch resistant
  • Easy to maintain
  • Many color ranges to choose from (more grain and movement hide dirt!)
  • Less likely to fade in sunlight
  • Great impact and indentation resistance
  • Easy to replace if damaged or desired

Considerations:

  • Some styles can be slippery for children in sock feet – use area rugs here
  • Pet urine needs to be removed as quickly as possible
  • Walk off mats should be used at every entrance to minimize dirt that can scratch the floor
  • Using area rugs will reduce the noise of children playing

Do you have a home with children or pets where you have used laminate flooring? What have your experiences been?
