What is a Mood Board?

July 15, 2019 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

Whether you have noticed it or not, many interior designs are created with functionality and a theme in mind. When we are designing our space, we thrive on giving a room its own feeling. This ambiance or tone we are setting is called the room’s “mood.” Many elements such as color, texture, design theme, and flooring can all play significant roles in how our rooms feel. However, it can be challenging to envision the finished product of a room. Picking out floors, paint colors, furniture, and more can all seem great in your head but turn to complete chaos. To prevent this, you can create a mood board. A mood board will gather all the elements you would like to add to your space and collectively display them together. Still confused? Do not be; here is everything to know about creating your mood board:

Digital Mood Board

Ideally, there are two types of mood boards which you can create. A simple mood board can be created digitally using apps such as Pinterest or even just a photo album on your phone. Save and pin all the ideas you would like to incorporate in your home. From flooring options to colors, you will begin to generate a mood. Seeing all these elements with each other can help you determine what is a “must” and what can wait.

Physical Mood Board

Your second option is creating a physical mood board. This is great because you can physically encounter the tangible objects, and it will allow you to understand the textures and feels you bring into your home. Go and get the carpet, laminate, or hardwood samples you are considering. You can collect paint swatches and fabrics as well. Pin these to a board as see how these elements interact with one another. Being able to touch them physically can help. Now, this may not always be the easiest option but is typically the best way to know exactly what you are getting.

Creating a mood board can save you time and money. While you may be investing more time up front, the finished product will be well worth it. All you have to do is decide which mood board is best for you.

How to Create a Mood Board While Designing

April 11, 2019 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

Designing a room has many elements that can play crucial roles in how we perceive it. From flooring to wall color choices down to the décor, everything used in your space will contribute to the overall design. When creating your space, you want to make sure you know what will complement each other and help unify the room. Some objects look great in the store or online but do not completely go with the theme when you get home. Finding combinations that work well together can be challenging; however, creating a mood board can allow you to do just that before the investments.

Physical Mood Board

With a physical mood board, you will physically obtain materials, paint swabs, and textures that you want to add to your space. For décor or larger items, simply print off images of the items. You can get a corkboard and pin all your ideas to it. For most textiles, stores will be able to provide you will samples. You should be able to get sample cabinet woods, carpets, laminates, and clothes to add to your board. A physical mood board is excellent for allowing you to visually see how different fabrics and textures work with one another. You will be able to notice shading in your own home’s light, feel the depth, and physically feel the materials. However, physical mood boards can take a little more time. This is great for people who are meticulous with everything they want to put in their design.

Digital Mood Board

Another common option is a digital mood board. This can be simply created by taking pictures on your phone and building a collection or a gallery. You can also use an app like Pinterest to gather your interest or influences. Digital mood boards can allow you to look through thousands of options quickly. Save and create different moods and create different galleries. For your end project, create a final mood board which takes your favorite influences from different categories.

Your final project should clearly influence or portray a mood. Colors, textures, patterns, and décor can all create different influences on an environment. Try to find elements that complement each other and work well with one another. Mood boards can save you time and money, so you know exactly what you want before investing the money.
