What Décor Does Your Design Style Demand? | Part Two

April 9, 2020 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

As we explored in Part One, every style gives us different guidelines that we can use to keep our styles focused. Different themes have become staples in home designs for their abundance in popularity and versatility. What creates a design theme are not only the colors, furniture, and flooring we select, but also the décor we use. Décor can be your way to give a personal splash of taste to your own design. So let us take a look at several more common design styles and what decor pieces each one needs.

Shabby Chic

Shabby Chic is a very airy, feminine design. This design uses antique and distressed furniture. Usually, its woods can be painted with distressed or whitewashed colors. Colors added to this design are done through pastel tones. These muted tones are pastel pinks, turquoises, and greens. Whether pastels or antique woods, both are great accent choices to enhance your décor.

Boho

Bohemian design is very lackadaisical and carefree. This style is colorful and loves to put comfort first. The décor is more spiritually-influenced or features textile patterns. This look is a great style to use tapestry or other unique textiles like carpets and throw pillows. Flourish your Bohemian style with patterns and repetition to help create a more uniformed space.

Industrial

Industrial or Urban style designs are typically found in lofts or inner-city areas. Unlike other designs that push more elements of nature, Industrial design is all about finding the beauty in the architectural structure of the space. Exposed beams, brick walls, pipes, Edison bulbs, and concrete are common styling influences. The raw, exposed construct is featured as the main highlight in these designs. Edgy, colorful artwork is perfect for these environments. You can also choose furniture that is more unfinished and exposed. Additionally, metals play a massive role in Industrial styling! Be creative and consider adding artificial décor pieces made from metals or repurposed goods.

Every design theme brings different visual and functional effects. Fully understanding how to accomplish a theme can allow you to decorate it properly. Try using some of these tactics in your own home to help better emphasize your preexisting design themes.

Shabby Chic Christmas Décor

December 6, 2019 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

We spend a lot of time and effort in designing our homes and tailoring them to our style. Having a Shabby Chic style can say a lot about you. This pastel, vintage wonderland can create a soft and dreamy oasis. Everything in your design has a purpose and place to help achieve the vintage look. However, traditional holiday décor may not always go with your home theme. While holidays décor is timeless, Shabby Chic has a very distinctive color palette and styling. Adding a forest-green tree with red bulbs can seem to clash with your home design. So, this year, why not make your Christmas décor accommodate your home? Investing in Shabby Chic seasonal décor is just another way to take more pride in your style even during the holiday seasons.

Christmas Tree

What is Christmas without a Christmas tree? While traditional styles may call for a rugged pine, your home will thrive with a more frosted look. Look for a frosted white, all-white, or silver Christmas tree this holiday season. You can decorate this beautiful tree with silver tinsel, pastel bulbs, and your favorite antique ornaments. This conversion from the traditional tree to a Shabby Chic appearance will make it hard for you to take down the décor after Christmas passes! Consider even the wrapping paper you use. Go with wrapping paper designs that complement your design in order to take your Christmas tree scene to the next level. Top it off with some white lights and a floral tree skirt to help complete the whole look!

Christmas Wreaths and Garland

Another aspect that is part of every Christmas design is the wreath. If you have already converted your Christmas tree to a Shabby Chic style, consider changing out your Christmas wreaths and garland. Having them be uniform with your tree can help accessorize your design. Plus, adding some Christmas bulbs and accessories to spruce up the look never hurts. In fact, you will find that these are great ways to help keep your design flowing throughout your space.

Other Décor

Also, your whole home is an outlet to express yourself. There are thousands of décor options for Shabby Chic homes to use during Christmas. From antique fireplace mantel décor to cute laced stockings to candles, you will have endless options to express yourself. Remember to keep your theme focused and agreeing with your current design. Do not over clutter your home during the holiday season so you can keep it feeling homey and well-kept.

All these little tricks will help complete your home. Remember, you can decorate your home how you want. If you love Shabby Chic, take pride in your design and let your Christmas decor also feel beautiful.

How to Master Shabby Chic Design

September 2, 2019 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

There are hundreds of renowned design themes to choose from today. Some designs have passed the test of time and have been around for centuries, while others can become quick fads. One style that has proven to be quite popular is Shabby Chic. This light and airy look can create a feminine atmosphere while incorporating many antique furnishing. It is very recognizable and a fun one to incorporate in your own home or apartment. If you love Shabby Chic and want to add it to your own space, this is everything you need to know:

Antique Furniture

Antique furniture is a staple of shabby chic. It creates a sense of elegance in the room by incorporating furniture which has stood the test of time. Many of these distressed antiques are typically painted bright white to help give the room a more airy feel. This lighter color scheme can allow old, heavy furniture to capture a more opulent appearance.

Color Palette

Shabby Chic is a very light and airy design. White is a great way to help open up the space and make older furniture feel less obtrusive. Typically, color is still added but in light hues, using pastel shades. Pastel colors are great because they can make very dramatic colors less influential on an environment. Consider if you painted a wall blue. The dark blue would have a very dramatic cool-tone effect on the environment. Yet, when you tone down the blue with pastel, you are left with a neutral tone that can still benefit the environment without being over-influential.

Decor

Shabby Chic is considered a very relaxed, romantic design. Romantic designs typically are very robust and dramatic, yet Shabby Chic can accomplish romance through its decor linens and fabrics incorporating floral designs. Shabby Chic is believed to be heavily influenced by garden design. Adding plant life or floral patterns can really make your space come alive. Incorporate subtle antiques like Edison Bulbs and distressed wood to give your space a more complete feel.

Shabby Chic is not for everyone, but it is a very growing style. It is a great way to help spruce up your home yet keep it as a passive environment. What do you like about Shabby Chic? Would you use it in your home? Let us know below in the comment section, and for more great tips and tricks on design, make sure to subscribe.

Decorating with Comfortable Farmhouse Style

January 22, 2013 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

Even if you don’t have a farmhouse style home, the style can work for you. Farmhouse is all about comfort with a nostalgic, vintage flair.  Found pieces from flea markets, estate sales and antique shows mix with comfortable upholstered pieces in either traditional or shabby chic styles.  It’s an easy style to live with and great for all rooms in the home.

This living room is full of charming farmhouse furniture and accessories.  The room itself is a standard design with wood floors, recessed lighting and crown molding.  It could be a renovation or new construction, and demonstrates how well farmhouse style can fit into a home. Neutral wall color lets the colors of the curtains, furniture and accessories stand out.

Vintage finds add character to the room. An old painted trunk makes for a charming coffee table with storage in the seating area.  Vintage inspired lamps throughout the room create lighting zones and accent lights for reading.  Comfortable seating in pretty slipcovers in natural linens and cotton make for easy cleaning.  This is definitely not a living room where you’d be afraid to put up your feet.

The wide plank wood floors offer a rustic charm.  A jute rug with a colorful border that coordinates with the colors of the room centers the seating area.

This living room shows how charming farmhouse style can be. Mixing in vintage and antique pieces let the homeowner’s personality shine through to make the room feel comfortable and personal. Fabrics and furniture further the feeling of comfortable farmhouse charm.
