When it’s time for new furniture, take a few steps to make your shopping easier and more successful.
First, plan your shopping by listing what you want to buy. Is it just a new easy chair or a whole room full of furniture? Either way, take the time to measure the space and determine the ideal size for every piece you need.
Bring your tape measure when you shop, along with any samples of flooring, paint, etc. you may have. When looking at furniture, don’t trust your eye to determine size. The high ceilings and large spaces common to furniture stores can make things look smaller than they really are.
Be sure to test any furniture you’re considering. Spend a few minutes sitting on that sofa or comfy-looking chair. Dining chairs also need to be tested – you want your guests to be comfortable enough to linger over dinner. Open drawers and doors to make sure everything is in good shape and works well.
Often, upholstered furniture can be purchased in a variety of fabrics. If you don’t care for the floor model, be sure to inquire about other options.
Finally, you don’t need to buy everything on your list all at once. It’s often easier to select the smaller items once your larger pieces such as the sofa are in place. Take your time. After all, you will be living with your purchases for years.
