Room Viewed From Above

December 26, 2011 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

This home includes an open hallway opening to the living room from the second floor, with the ceiling vaulted to two stories. A design like this involves some careful planning. The room needs to be inviting from the ground perspective but still have an appeal when looked at from above.

The designer for this room succeeded with both goals. If you walk into the room, glossy wood flooring, an inviting traditional area rug, the bank of windows and the warm gold and cream tones provide a rich interesting space.

It’s from above, however, that the room really comes into its own. From this angle, the antique light fixture becomes the focal point. Its bronze finish picks up the brown shades on the richly patterned floor-to-ceiling curtains and the dark tones of the area rug.

The fireplace to the right has a large enough profile to call attention to it even from the upper hallway and having the surround reaching the ceiling helps to connect upper and lower levels. Even the grand piano draws the eye upward from below, inviting a visitor to capture the feel of every level of this room.

The room itself it not very large, so it makes sense to choose a small sofa and coffee table that focus more on height than footprint. Bringing every part of the room together through color helps a smaller space feel larger and more congruent.

Overall, the design choices in this room meet the needs of the homeowners and visitors, providing an inviting vista from every possible level in the home.

Vaulted Room Dramatic and Inviting

December 15, 2011 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

If your home has vaulted ceilings in one or more rooms, you know the difficulty you face maintaining the drama a high ceiling provides while keeping the space warm and inviting.

This hotel lobby has captured some of both goals. Several design decisions made this possible.

First, the layout and architectural features of the space support an integrated room. The two tall thin windows help make the connection stronger and the choice to put oversized crown molding at the ceiling gives it a more significant presence in the room.

Colors are cohesive throughout and help to connect the flooring with the full height of the space. For example, the diagonal squares scattered on the stone floor have a dark taupe tone that is matched by the focal wall to the right and the stairs and railings for both staircases.

Artwork and accessories also work well in this room. The large three-part canvas echoes the shape of the long lean windows and the art’s soft tones provide a connection between all levels of the room without demanding too much attention. The lean plant almost feels like a piece of sculpture, and its height continues the theme of connecting upper and lower areas. Finally, the simple round table mirrors the curve of the stairway and brings attention to people-level.

What ideas can you borrow from this room to combine drama and comfort in your own vaulted-ceiling space?

Decorating with Vaulted Ceilings

October 12, 2011 By creatingyourspace Leave a Comment

Do you need to address a room with vaulted ceilings? Some people just ignore the upper area and design only the bottom eight feet or so. You can connect that high ceiling with the rest of the room with a few careful design decisions.

This room uses color as a strong unifying element. The warm creams and gold of the flooring connects with the light walls, while the darker small diagonal squares are echoed in the dark taupe wall and the richer tones evident in the two stairways.

The large art piece has a more minor presence because of the soft tones and limited contrast with the wall. However, its height and placement allows it to play a key role in connecting the various levels of the space. Its size and shape as well as a design that uses three verticals connected by one image support the long lean windows on either side.

It’s interesting to see crown molding used in a room where the ceiling boundary is so high. The designer chose an unusually large molding but the height reduces the impact. Once again, this additional decision brings the eye all the way to the top of the room and provides something to help integrate the space.

You can capture the best of vaulted ceiling decorating by remembering to focus on bringing the upper area into harmony with the rest of the space and then supporting your ceiling with every other design decision in the room.
